Hello everyone, my name is Jihad and I’m 26 years old. I’m excited to share that I’m the first volunteer from Jordan to join SoFiA e.V. here in Germany. I’m living and volunteering in Trier. My project name is Treffpunkt am Weidengraben. Coming to Germany marked the first step toward fulfilling my dream.
Arrival in Germany
The first month wasn’t easy. I still laugh when I remember waking up on my second day and thinking, “What are you doing here? Why did you come?” I was scared, but also curious.
February 1st was a day I'll never forget, filled with emotions, tears, and hugs. Saying goodbye to my family and friends was incredibly difficult, but it was time to start a new chapter, a new place, and a journey filled with discoveries, emotions, and dreams. I'm so grateful for this amazing opportunity, and I'm so happy that my first trip is to Germany.
I stayed with a sweet family of four who welcomed me with big smiles and warm hearts. They were curious about my culture, especially because their oldest daughter had volunteered in the UK. On my first day, they surprised me with a yummy cake made by their daughter Yasmine, who is a talented little baker. I’ll never forget how kind and caring they were, always ready to help me and answer my questions.
We explored Trier together, visiting its beautiful historical spots while they shared the stories behind them. Those moments filled my heart and made my first month here feel so much lighter and warmer.

Start in the Project
When I started at Treffpunkt am Weidengraben, I stepped into a lively community space where local elderly residents come together to share their time and stories. My days quickly filled with hands-on tasks, helping in the kitchen, setting up tables and chairs, and preparing breakfast every Monday. But it wasn’t just about chores; I joined in the fun too, painting alongside the residents, singing a mix of traditional and modern German songs, and even learning to knit. Sometimes, we’d let loose with a friendly game of bowling, cheering each other on like a team.
A meaningful part of my role is supporting refugees, many of whom speak Arabic. Being able to translate for them, explain our activities, and encourage participation has brought me immense joy. At first, connecting with the elderly residents was a challenge each person is so unique but gradually, they became like a second family. They care for me in return, checking in whenever I attend seminars or share a new experience.
Find unity in diversity
Working in such a culturally rich and diverse environment has been eye-opening. I’ve learned to collaborate with people from all walks of life, appreciate differences, and find unity in diversity. I’ve encountered countless traditions and habits some completely new that I’ve even started incorporating into my own life. I realized that this dynamic, ever-changing environment perfectly matches my personality, as I thrive on variety and activity rather than routine. It’s this energy that makes my project feel truly special and gives me a deep sense of belonging.
Throughout all of this, this journey is the first time I’ve ever been far from my family and friends. At first, I thought I might feel alone, but instead, I’ve been blessed to meet the volunteers from different countries and cultures. We’re sharing this adventure together, and I know the second half of my volunteering will bring even more unforgettable moments.
In the end, I truly believe nothing in life happens by accident. Every unfamiliar experience is teaching me something new. Stepping out of my comfort zone isn’t always easy it’s an adventure, and adventures come with challenges. But those challenges are what make me grow, not just on the outside, but deep inside too.
With my warmest regards, until next time.
